Solid Tyres for Compact Construction Equipment


Compact Construction equipment such as skid steer loaders, back hoe loaders, wheeled excavators are deployed in construction, agricultural, urban infrastructure development applications for a variety of tasks as digging, moving building materials, landscaping, grading, loading etc. 

These machines are generally factory fitted with pneumatic tyres which are inherently prone to punctures, damage and fast wear, due the severe service conditions in which these machines are used. This results in losses associated with frequent downtime, repair and replacement.
To address these issues, solid tyres with application specific patterns suitable for compact construction equipment have been developed. Solid tyres are 100% puncture-proof and are made from highly wear resistant rubber compounds. This gives them a lifespan three to five times that of conventional pneumatic tyres. These tyres also significantly improve occupational safety as there is no possibility of tyre blowout related accidents.
The tyres have an abrasion resistant tread that is specifically compounded for use on a wide range of working conditions that these machines are used in. Furthermore, solid tyres have useable tread depths between 65 to 90mm as compared to 20-25 mm tread depths on most pneumatic tyres currently available. The extra deep tread gives a greater wear volume, consequently enhancing the lifespan of the tyre.
Innovative features include Side-Wall Apertures in the tyres that absorb shock and provide cushioning, thereby providing a stable ride.  The side-wall apertures also provide additional traction by allowing the tyre to flex and grip better on uneven work surfaces.
The cut-resistant Traction Lug tyres are suited for use on rough terrain, and uneven, semi-prepared surfaces typically found on construction, mining and demolition sites. The tread design provides traction in the dirt and extended tyre life on uneven surfaces. Traction Lug tyres are available in different tread depths, lug-void ratios, and sidewall aperture arrangements to suit the application.
Smooth Tyres are made with extra rubber and an abrasion-resistant tread compound. This makes them ideally suited for use on hard abrasive surfaces such as highways, airport-runways and other paved surfaces, like factories, foundries, recycling-plants and waste transfer stations where the floor may be contaminated with flash, slag, glass, etc. These tyres also have a higher load carrying capacity.
All solid skid steer tyres are mounted on Heavy-Duty wheels and are supplied as ready-to-fit assemblies. No special mounting equipment is required. Machine operators can change tyres with ease.
Fewer replacements mean that costs associated with re-purchase, downtime, inventory and repair are significantly reduced. Solid tyres are therefore a viable cost-effective alternative for the customer to seriously consider.
The factors above combine to offer a product that significantly improves equipment utilization in severe applications where tyres are puncture prone and susceptible to damage. Solid Tyres for Aerial Equipment


Aerial work platforms (AWP’s) such as boom lifts, scissor lifts, telehandlers are used to provide temporary access for people or equipment to inaccessible areas, usually at heights and are frequently deployed for industrial construction activities, for infrastructure development, in airports, manufacturing & petrochemical plants for a variety of maintenance activities etc.

Full Tyres being the only connect between the vehicle and the terrain, it is critical to ensure that they are reliable, safe and performance-worthy anytime & every time. This is of even greater importance when tyres are working at heights. Currently, some AWP tyres are made puncture-proof by a process called foam filling which involves injecting the pneumatic tires with liquid polyurethane elastomers that cure into a synthetic rubber. While this renders the tyres puncture-proof, they are still prone to damage due to the operating conditions in which these machines are used.

Low profile solid tyres specially designed for all types of elevated work platforms ranging from 20’ rough terrain scissors to 150’ boom lifts are now available.

Besides being 100% flat proof, solid tyres offer users several additional advantages over foam filled pneumatics at no additional cost. Solid tyres have high damage resistance and a deeper tread depth resulting in better grip & longer service life. The lower sidewall flex eliminates the bouncy ride typically associated with foam filled tyres.

Unlike foam filling which has a turnaround of anywhere between 3 to 5 days, solid tyres can be immediately & easily fitted on site as these are supplied as ready to fit assemblies. Thus reducing, downtime, TCO (total cost of ownership) & CPH (cost per hour).Many OHS require that tyres for aerial equipment such as boomlifts & telehandlers are puncture proof to improve safety while working at heights.

Solid Tyres for Underground Mining


In view of stricter regulations, reduced environmental & social impact, there is an increased preference for underground mining over open pit mining. However, the working conditions in underground mines can be far more demanding due to space & safety considerations. At the same time, the highly specialised equipment is more capital intensive and demands high productivity. This has led to an even greater need for failure-free performance from tires.

Solid Tyre Performance Monitoring System

Traxter’s Principal, Trident has been granted a utility patent by the United States Patent Office (Patent number 10,017,017) for a device developed to capture and relay the temperature and usage of a solid tire.

Heat build-up in solid tires is one of the main causes of failure. This is due to continuous operations, long duty cycles, long haul distances, increased operating speed which are typical service conditions in applications such as mining, industrial plant & material handling.

The Solid Tire Performance Monitoring System (STPMS) consists of sensors encased in specially designed enclosure that can be embedded in a suitable sidewall aperture of a solid tire and a small handheld display monitor.

The sensors continuously send the temperature of each tire to the display interface in real time and alert the user when temperature nears critical levels. The system also records the distance traveled by each tyre & operating hours thus enabling users monitor the life and overall performance of the solid tyres at any given point.

Polyurethane Foam Filling

Tyre Filling is a process in which a pneumatic tyre is injected & pressurized with a special 2 component urethane polymer in a precise proportion using a special metering pump. The polyurethane cures into a soft, resilient, synthetic rubber core replacing the air in the tyre.

The resultant filled tyre is thus rendered puncture proof and maintains the required pressure throughout its service life. PU Filled tyres have a full footprint & are capable of carrying their rated load at all times.

The soft core is designed to provide a ride similar to air-filled pneumatic tyres.
